I have a bunch of VHS tapes that I need to rip and convert to DVD. I have my VCR hooked up to my PC through my Compro VideoMate capture card. I usually just throw the MPEG I captured into Ulead Video Studio and make a DVD. I have no problems playing the captured MPEG on my computer and no problems with the DVDs I make.

I downloaded TMPGEnc because I want to crop the sides of the video to get rid of the fuzzy/garbled video that always appears on the bottom. THe problem is that TMPGEnc only displays the last frame of the video file when it shows the preview. When I go through with the conversion process, the sound plays as it is supposed to, but the only thing displayed for the entire length of the video is the last frame from the original video file. Does anyone know what the problem is? Thanks!

I incorrectly said I was using MPEG 1, I am actually using MPEG 2. So I've tried multiple capture programs and I still have the same problem, I can't get the video to work correctly with TMPGEnc. I am wondering if it is the codec causing the problem. How would I tell if this is the case? Which of the many codecs should I download?

MPEG2 is MPEG2, difference in codec should not matter in this case.

I am surprised that Ulead doesn't have any filters and trimmers. Perhaps you just didn't find them?

I was surprised too. I've been using Ulead Video Studio 7 which came with my capture card, which does not have a cropping filter. I just downloaded the trial version of Ulead Video Studio 10, and sure enough, it has a cropping filter. Thanks!

Still, I really want to know why the video files I captured are having problems in TMGEnc. I plan on doing more video editing in the future, so a solution would be helpful. I will keep trying!
