I use VirtualDubMod to get a .WAV out of a DivX .AVI and then convert it to .AC3 (and author movie with DVD Lab Pro.)

Here's the warning that I often get:

VirtualDub has detected an improper VBR audio encoding in the source AVI file (audio stream 1).
The current preference is to rewrite the audio header with standard CBR values during processing for better compatibility. This may introduce up to 47773ms of skew from the video stream. If this is unacceptable, decompress the *entire* audio stream to an uncompressed WAV file and recompress with a constant bitrate encoder. (bitrate 166.8+-36.9kbps)

Do you still want to rewrite the header?

    Yes No

What does this mean? Whan should I do to protect myself from audio sync problems?

    thanks

    No.
Easiest way to get a wav out of an AVI is simply to open the AVI in GoldWave, save wav.
Generally, VBR mp3 audio in AVI is a PITA - Avoid.

Or since you have VDM open, just save it out as a WAV there with full audio processing. I then convert it to AC3 with ffmpeggui. If DVD Lab can accept elemental streams, add the AC3 along with the encoded MPEG-2 video when you author.

Shouldn't make a bit of difference if you are going to save out with full processing. If you are going to use ffmpeg though you can just convert the avi directly.
