Hi, guys. First time posting here, so I hope this isn't too simple a question.

I have a bunch of DVD's (mostly DVD+R) with some video files burned to them, which I have just been playing on my laptop up to now. Some are DivX, some Xvid, some MPEG, some AVI... you get the idea.

    1) What common computer video formats can be played on DVD players? I.e. just from a data CD, not a VCD.

    2) How are these specified in DVD player specs?

    3) Can anyone recommend an INEXPENSIVE player which can handle some, most, or all of these?

The DVD's have mostly downloaded movies, which I burned to them to save HDD space. But I'd really like to play them on my large TV also, and my laptop doesn't have S-Video out, so I figured a DVD player is the best way to go (plus not needing to tie up the laptop playing DVDs).

    Thanks,
    Jason

You can explore our DVD Players list to the left and get some ideas. Generally, you would check Xvid/Divx capability, and maybe DVD+ capability. From there you would just have to dig around a little in the specs.

Though they may be able to play Xvid/Divx, that doesn't mean every variety of the format. But you can use a tool like AVIRecomp to re-encode them and make them compatible with most of those type players.

But other members could probably give you more info on their favorites.

    And welcome to our forums.

Thanks for the advice. I'll look around a little.

I'm really not interested in owning a video game system. If I was going to go with something that's not just a component device, I'd get a Freevo system with good tv-out video card and an IR remote control interface.[/url]

I have the DVP642, it is a decent player and both (I have 2) of mine have been very dependable.

THe Philips 5960 seems to be popular lately, but I don't have any experience with that model.

I'm currently using the Oppo 971H, excellent DVD playback quality and very good Divx support.

For best results, stick with a player that is Divx certified. There are many players that can play divx, that are not officially certified. There should be a list at divx.com

I'm confused. Other people said it is possible. Can you elaborate a bit?

  8. DVD players by the book are not designed to play Video files.

Playing video files on a DVD player is a bonus feature that the maker throw in.
