Define soap opera. Must they have a detergent sponsor?

Would Grey's Anatomy or Desperate Housewives count? Nobody would counter that "Brothers and Sisters" or "Six Degrees" is a soap regardless of sponsor.

This is one of the reasons why I have an HDTV in the computer cave (lab).

    Yes - and I'm Female = 2% [ 5 ]
    Yes - and I'm Male = 6% [ 12 ]
    No - can't stand them or don't care about them = 79% [ 153 ]

Personally hate them as much as reality shows.

Most popular shows turn into soap operas after a few years.

Eg, ER used to focus on practising emergency medicine, now it's about the love lives of the doctors and nurses (and I've given up on it). Shows often lose their edge and get more relationship oriented. Another example: M*A*S*H began, like the movie, as an anti-war black comedy. After a few years it was all touchy-feely, heart-warming, and about personal growth.

Desperate Housewives began as a parody of soaps, and while still watchable, is veering dangerously close to just being a soap.

The problem with soaps is that they eventually combine all the characers in every way possible. After a few years every female has had a relationship with every male. Everyone has plotted against everyone else. Instead of splitting up and never seeing each other again, disfunctinal relationships keep going.

Now we have a genre of "action soaps", like JJ Abrams' Alias and Lost. Quite involving for a while, but ultimately silly and illogical stories obfuscated by a thick layer of soapy story lines.

Yep. Even Lost is having difficulty moving the plot, padding out soap themes. Is there a plot?
