Okay, I'm trying to get a bunch of vob, ifo, and bup files to convert to avi (or any of these, I don't know what's best: .asf, .m1v, .mp2, .mp2v, .mpe, .mpeg, .mpg, .mpv2, .wm, and .wmv).

I got the vob, ifo, and bup files off of a DVD with my Windows 99 and now they're on my new XPS and I want to make them compatible with Windows Movie Maker so I can use the footage.

It's taken me a while to figure out what I'm trying to do-- any tips on what I have to do to get there? Any information would be appreciated... what converter to use or being pointed in the direction of a guide for people just a little bit out of their league would be good.

If you still have the DVD an easy way is to use VOB2MPEG, then you will have one large MPEG file of the entire DVD. From there, you may be able to open that in WMM.

Another method is to use VirtualDub Mod and open the individual VOBS, then convert them to DV format by installing the Panasonic DV codec. DV is very easy to edit, compared to MPEG. WMM should accept the DV with no problems. And WMM can output DV. This is useful if you want to convert it back to MPEG at a later time with minimal quality loss after the edits.

Those are all freeware tools, so you have little to lose except time. If you are not familiar with VirtualDub or VD Mod, it's a very useful tool and well worth learning about. It will also edit, then you wouldn't need WMM at all. There are many guides available for VirtualDub.

What do you want to use the edited footage for? I mean what will be the final format?

And I deal with all kinds of people. We were all new to this stuff once.

    And welcome to our forums.
