Just burnt 300 Taiyo Yuden DVD-R 8x, TYG02, over the weekend. Had 16 coasters.
The DVD's were burnt on two identical systems - HPXW4100's. Only difference was that one has two two year old Pioneer A109's. The other has two new Pioneer A111's. All the coasters were on the A109's, (16/100 coasters)!!!!! Not one on the A111's (0/200 coasters).
I have had nothing but problems with my Pioneer A109's. There is nothing wrong with Pioneer A109's. I just got a couple of bad ones. They were cheap and seemed like a good deal at the time. The A111's are also faster - take less time to get started and produce more discs in the same period of time. I believe the heating problem is because they are old and worn out.
The A109's started producing coasters after about six hours and I had to stop using them until they cooled down. All this time I was thinking the discs were my problem. It was bad burners. Probably half used up when I got them. Who knows. Just bought two more A111's today. Coasters cost money and even more time and aggravation. The A111's are only $42 delivered. What a lesson. Life is good.

(Bought my A109's from Rima. Got my A111's on ebay. Go figure.)

The average DVD burner is not really made to burn lots of DVDs in a short time. It may be that improvements in the circuitry and maybe even the laser diodes has improved in the last couple of years and helped make the newer burners more efficient and help reduce the heat produced during burning. Hard to say.

It's too bad burners don't have better cooling options. A fan doesn't help much unless you can get it to blow through the burner, and that may just add more dust.

Follow up. Just replaced my old Pioneer A109's with A111's. Burnt 200 TY 8x over the weekend on two systems with 4 new A111's Zero coasters. First time ever. My coaster problem was in fact the burners.

I like the 111 drives much better than the 109 too. I'm about to swap my main system's 109 for the 111 in another computer. Nothing wrong with the 109, but between the two drives, the 111 seems to just do better. Sort of how the 105 was better than the 103 (ignoring speed differences).
