I have a movie that's in avi format and has subtitles. I normally use ConvertXtoDVD to convert my avi's to dvd. But it won't let me add the subtitles before I hit convert. Is there an easier way to do this?

You may have a different format of subtitle that ConvertXToDVD doesn't like. There are several formats commonly used. Since this is mainly about subtitles, I'll move you to the subtitle forum and you may get more information there. Check the 'stickies' at the top of the forum and they may help. Should be easy enough to change most subs to a different format.

What is the subtitle extension extension?

How did you change it ? Subtitle workshop can be good for some formats.

Do they have the same name as the movie file ?

  5. SFV isn't a subtitle.

    That might be the problem:
SFV is an abbreviation for simple file verification, a checksum format using the CRC32 algorithm to verify the integrity of files.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SFV

According to Subtitle Workshop, it currently supports around 56 subtitle formats. I didn't know there were that many formats.

These seem to be the most common:

    SubRip
    SubViewer (1 & 2.0)
    MicroDVD
    SubStationAlpha
    Sami

    SFV is a checksum.

Open the file in notepad and see if you actually see subtitles.
