flv extract produces and audio stream in mp3 format whereas virtualdub only loads wav apparently. damn!
I thought virtualdub could also load mp3's.

VD shouldn't have any problems loading MP3 audio. You might upgrade the MP3 codec for VD with Lame MP3, though.

lame 3.96 is the one I use to register
My second question is how do I load an mp3 audio track in virtualdub 1.6.17
As far as I can see there is an option to load wav so when I try to load mp3 it throws an error.
    Thanks

Sorry, I use VD Mod most of the time. I hate to say it, I don't know how to add a MP3 audio track with VD 1.6.17. I assumed it was similar for adding audio

Easy with VD Mod, just use 'Add' in the 'Streams' window, then add just about any type of audio you want. I must be missing something with VD 1.6.17.

Virtualdubmpeg2 is closer to virtualdub than virtualdubmod. In it you can go Audio -> Browse for Audio, and you wav, mp3 and AC3 as options.

Yes but virtualdub-MPEG2 does allow for loading the file although flv extract seems to produce an mp3 that is not compatible for VDMpeg2 as it does show and error loading the file even though mp3 is listed in the dropdown window to load such file
