Hi, I am having a problem with creating a dvd from a recorded basketball game from my media center. I have been trying to use the media center toolbox functions to remove the commercials and convert to mpeg. I then use tmpgenc to create dvd folders. I then try to use dvd shrink to shrink it to a dvd-5 since the dvd folder size is about 4900mb.
When attempting to reauthor in dvd shrink I am getting errors(invalid handle is one of them, I will post the other tonight when I get home) that occur at various points of the backup, both using full backup and reauthor. I think that it may be the audio encoding in tmpgenc because if I play the video in preview mode of shrink, it seems to clip some words. but it may be the video. I have successfully encoded the mpegs videos using sonic my dvd, but this program is very slow(hours) and enlarges the dvd to 6.8gb, which looks terrible after compressing using shrink(which does work with the files from sonic my dvd). I know the original drv-ms files and the mpeg files are fine as they play with no problem in many media players(vlc, intervideo, wmp). Any ideas as to another option that is just as quick as tmpgenc or as to the problem itself?

I would say that you aren't setting your bitrate correctly in the very beggining of your post. If i'm understanding you correctly your using tmpgenc to encode. With the correct bitrates you shouldn't be going over your target filesizes and should be no need to use shrink at all. My best guess, perhaps others will have some better insight.

Thanks for the tip legion78, but the problem isn't really that it is going over the target size, as the file that it outputs is the size that it stated before encoding. The problem is that after encoding, dvdshrink can't shrink it to fit on a dvd5, even though I am only trying to shrink to approx 85%. The error may be a problem with shrink but, I think that it is with tmpenc's encoding.

I tried it again yesterday with a different mpeg for a different game, this time no error. So I tried it again with the first mpeg, got the same errors again. Now, this is an mpeg that was converted from a dvr-ms file. This has to be an error with the encoding of the video or audio obviously. TMPGENC is the only one of 3 programs that prompts the error from shrink, as it worked successfully with Sonic Mydvd(which is cumbersome and slow) and Roxio easy dvd(almost as bad as mydvd). Is there a way to re-encode the mpeg to correct the issue without losing any of the quality?

If you encode to mpg, why not set the bitrate correctly not to have to shrink it afterwards? You'd gain in quality, trouble & time.

I am using a media center toolbox function that removes commercials and converts to mpeg, it does not have a bitrate setting for adjusting. I can not find a bitrate option in tmpgenc either. Are you suggesting using another tool for re-encoding at another bitrate?

When you say "TMPGEnc" - is it TMPGEnc DVD Author - I get that impression. If so, that's an authoring app, and doesn't encode.
I'd suggest you calculate what bitrate would fit a DVD (leaving some head room for authoring), reencode your mpgs with TMPGEnc (the encoder) or CCE or MainConcept or <fill in other mp2 encoders here> at that bitrate, then author.

Yes, I am using tmpgenc dvd author, sorry about that, I should have been more specific. Thank you for the help, I will give that a try tonight with the old video and see if that helps.
