I need to review the codecs on my system and get rid of any that are problematic. I downloaded a few packages mentioned elsewhere with the following results:

Sherlock will list codecs but does not allow their removal. It tells me a few codecs are bad. What it really means is the codecs have been removed, but why are they still listed? I tried to save the codec list and the program hung.

RadLight Filter Manager allows you to "unregister" a codec, but it is still listed. In fact I can unregister the same codec multiple times (a bug?). Not sure it's really working.

Codec Sniper presents an error message in a foreign language and runs but displays no codecs.

The ControlPanel/Sounds/Hardware/VideoCodecs listing allows for removal, however, after removal the codec still appears in Sherlock as a bad codec. The codec list in ControlPanel is shorter than the one in Sherlock and it also lists file names in some cases rather than codec names. I tried rebooting but this did not magically fix things.

Note that I downloaded all programs mentioned above today. They are the latest versions.

Is there any real solution for codec management?

    Thanks,

    -Mike

You could try booting in 'Safe Mode' and see if Codec Sniper will work that way. Safe Mode keeps most installed drivers from loading and they can sometimes interfere with malware or other removal programs.
