With all of the free open source ac3 encoders out there, I'm wondering if there is a way to check/verify that the files these encoders are creating are in check with the DVD spec? In other words, if I'm creating DVDs to sell to customers, I want to be sure that the ac3 will be just as good (without error) as the ac3 when I spend $300 for an encoder licensed by Dolby such as that which comes with Vegas or whatever...

Not a direct answer to your question, but a start.

I'm trying to use Aften right now but something isn't working. When I press encode, it comes up instantly and says the encoding is finished but it didn't do anything.

When I mouse over the wav file in the aftengui, it says this:

    Channels: 1
    Bitrate: 705kbps
    Sampling rate: 44100hz
    Duration: 31:22

Is there something wrong with my source wavs? Do they have to be 2 channel or a certain bitrate in order to encode to ac3?

ah I discovered what it was in Aften.. I picked (rightfully) 2/0 for the audio encoding mode and that does not work!

I then picked "unspecified" and it encoded the file. Why can I not pick 2/0 as the setting when that is what it should be?

Also, I noticed no setting to change the sample rate from 44100 to 48000 as required by the DVD spec. Unless this is automatic? Is there any software out there that can read the specs on an ac3 file?

I think the AC3Machine is a better choice because of that option.

Gspot but limited to bitrate, number of channels and sampling rate.
