I have downloaded an avi file, where audio is always delayed by around 6 seconds.
Is there a simple way to fix this?

I have access to the DVD ( from which this avi was created ) as well, which is a RIP from a VHS tape.

Following is some info about the file from VLC media player.

    Stream 0

    Codec - XVID
    Resolution - 336x256
    Frame Rate - 29.970030

    Stream 1

    Codec - mpga
    Channels - 2
    Sample Rate - 48000 Hz
    Bitrate - 109 kb/s

    Length of Video - 2:32:26

Extract the audio with a program such as goldwave, remove approx. 6 seconds from the beginning of the file, then encode with virtualdub.

  3. You can simply remultiplex the audio and video with VirtualDub and set a -6000 millisecond audio delay value to advance the audio by 6 seconds.
