I hope you guys can help me. This problem has now plagued me for months. It is in fact why I started trying to import VOB files as a work-around solution until I can correct it. That decision and the resulting research is what lead me to this forum. Below, I'll list several posts that I had on other sites, to bring you all up to speed.
Anyway, here's the deal.
I can’t get any of my video applications to work on my AMD PC. We’re not talking any high level stuff here. I’ve got several apps for the sole purpose of capture and final cut edits so that I can score or do sound design in Nuendo.
The apps are:
Sonic Solutions DVDit
Sonic Solutions My DVD
Pinnacle Studio 8
Windows Media Movie Maker
I’ve got a Canopus ADVC-100 converter connected to a Brand New VHS/DVD Recorder.
I pop the VHS tape in, press play and it shows up on any capture page of the 3 apps that will capture (DVDit is an edit only app.).
I set up the start capture page (giving the project a title, setting times, etc.)
I start the capture process. These are the results.
MY DVD: The PC completely locks up and has to manually shut down from the tower.
Studio 8: It does the capture. But when you select stop capture. The PC locks up. Sometimes I can exit the program from the task manager. Other times, not.
In either case, when I play back the file, I get stuttering and the file jumps to the end. A 30 second spot plays back in 5.2 seconds!
Movie Maker: Same as studio 8 except that I HAVE to manually restart from the tower.
I also tried importing files that I know were fine as they were finished spots on my Xeon PC. The result for that was:
DVDit: Imported fine. Played back like the other files, stuttering and skipping along. This time it might have taken 10 seconds to get to the end.
Can you tell me what I need to adjust on the PC to get these apps to function properly?
These are the specs on the AMD:
AMD Athlon 64 3200+ (2.0Ghz) 512 cache 939-pin (OS: XP PRO)
MOBO: Giga-Byte GA-K8NS Ultra 939 (Chipset NVIDIA nForce 3 Ultra)
DDR Memory: Dual Channel 2 X 512mb DDR 400MHz/ PC3200 184-pin
OS Hard Drive: (Serial ATA): Maxtor 80gb 7200rpm
Audio Hard Drive: Maxtor (6V300F0) DiamondMax 10 300GB SATA3G 7200 RPM 16MB Cache
Video Hard Drive: Maxtor (6V300F0) DiamondMax 10 300GB SATA3G 7200 RPM 16MB Cache
Video Card(AGP 8X): ATI Radeon 9550 256mb DVI/TV-out
Sound Card: Steinberg/RME 9652
DVD Burner: 16 X Dual DVD +/-RW
Floppy: 1.44 Drive
Network Card: Integrated LAN with Gigabit Controller
USB Ports: 4
Power Supply: 400 Watt ATX 12V PSU
That’s all of the information I have. Any ideas?

For weeks now I've been having trouble getting my PC to capture video feeds from my ADVC. I've un-installed and re-installed the apps several times. I've used my McAfee Shredder to get to the stuff I couldn't find that might be interfering with the process.
Now I've finally regained my capture feature. But the files play back skipping and stuttering. I can't import this crap into Nuendo to work on in this condition. Any suggestions on what I can do to get the captures to play back properly?
Oh, I'm using Sonic My DVD v.4

Check if hardware drivers are up to date as well as your audio and video codecs. Drivers because 1st it would work and now it does, codecs cause it is skipping and stuttering. Just a tought, I'm no expert.

Keyplayer: But if the hardware didn't change and the apps didn't change, why would it stop working in the first place?
The other thing it's started doing is some kind of "Association Glitch". I create a file in one format but it becomes associated with a different app and is corrupted.
Example: When this stuttering problem started with my Athalon, I tried capturing with my Nuendo 3 PC (a Dual Processor Xeon). I captured the file in Windows Movie Maker, which played back perfectly and then tried transferring it over to the Athalon. Even before I hit the transfer button, I could see it was wrong. The Xeon said the file was wvm. But the Athalon window showed it as a quicktime file. When I transfered it and tried to play it by using the "Open With" tool to get it to play on Movie Maker, it was corrupted.
I removed quicktime and evey other app until I was down to just Windows Media player on the Athalon. I tried doing an AVI file and sending it over to the Athalon. I got the right logo this time but the file was still corrupted.
I just don't get it. Gigastudio, my VSTi's and Nuendo 1.6 runs just fine on the Athalon. I've got the audio on it's own drive and the video files would go on a spearate drive, if I could get the damned thing to work. I can even copy video files from a disk and have them play properly on the Athalon.
It's crazy, the ONLY thing it won't do is capture from a direct video feed from my ADVC. It'll play the feed clear as a bell. It'll set up the capture process just like it's supposed to. You hit Start Capture and you watch the second counter roll off just like it's supposed to. Then you hit Stop Capture and you get several variations of freezing.
The Sonic apps show a not responding error message and you can close them out. Movie Maker goes straight to not responding at the Start Capture point and Pinnacle crashes the pc entirely requiring a reboot.
At this point the only thing I can think to do now is just replace the computer. It's been to the shop several times and nobody yet has been able to tell me what's wrong with it.

I think there's no need to replace the computer. It only takes a windows update to change everything without having changed the hardware or the apps.
Check for these things by the given order, some might sound stupid but if the shop guys haven't find the bug it's probably something stupid.
-file system: fat/fat32 problem (your file system should be ntfs, if it is fat/fat32 the solution is to format the HD)
-clean you system registry (tuneUp utilities, wintools, regcleaner, etc- this will solve the problem of association glitch)
-check for broken codecs: if you use k-lite codec packs, go to its folder and use an app inside tools folder "fixcodecs". If you don't have klite I've placed a copy here:
http://www.damn-new.com/fixcodecs.rar
run it with, at least, the first 3 option selected. This will detect broken codecs in the system and in the registry.
