Hi there, i'm thinking about buying a Toshiba HD-A1 DVD player, but well it be able to play back-up movies, without the skips or freezes? i know new regular dvd players have a copy protection that won't allow you to watch back-up movies.

You are being a dolt.
Of course it plays "back up" DVD discs.
Don't be silly.

It should play them fine although note that burning dual layer DVD media can be tricky and the only brand that is reliable is Verbatim.Originally Posted by jcguy
If you have something other than Verbatim and/or you don't burn them as well as possible you could end up with a very incompatible DVD there.
Look into using ImgBurn as your burning program ... there should be a guide to it in the TOOLS section.

I use Verbatim, i use nero express w/ anydvd, sometimes i use dvd cloner 3.

Use ImgBurn and refer to this guide: CLICK HERE
ImgBurn is the best way to burn a DVD Video be it a single layer or dual layer DVD. In fact a dual layer DVD is even harder to burn correctly than a single layer DVD making the use of ImgBurn all that more important when burning dual layer DVD recordables.
NERO sucks for DVD Video burning especially for dual layer DVD recordables.

I also have the Toshiba HD-A1 and it plays every kind of DVD +/-R media fine , with one exception; My machine in particular has a hard time with DVD+R DL discs, mostly with Memorex discs. They will play fine up to the layer change, and then the machine chokes. I'm not sure if this issue is universal with all the HD-A1's, supposedly the machine doesn't support DVD+R's but my player plays single layer DVD+R's just fine. I have since switched to using DVD-R DL discs, and they work beautifully right through the whole disc. Make sure if you do get one that the firmware is up to date, I believe they're on version 2.0 now. You will love the player's upconversion quality, top notch! And did I mention, it plays HD-DVD's?

Well i do see that the Toshiba is shipping out the next generation, hd-a2, i might wait for those to come out.

Prices for Toshiba HD-A1 are much lower now. Unless you own a HDTV larger than 50", you probably won't need HD-A2.
Some media do have problems with HD-A1. You should burn them at slower speeds.
I have 35 HD-DVD edited on DVD+R DL(Fujitsu, Verbatim, Memorex). burned at 2.4x = all OK.
Burned at higher speeds, sometimes the player don't see them or movie hangs when passing to second layer.
HD-A1 do a pretty nice upscaling job of regular DVD.L'avenir, c'est le futur! -
Well i just got a 17in HDTV from dell. I need to find a site were i can pay if it off monthly.

Try Verbatim DVD+R DL and burn with ImgBurn ... makes a world of difference when it comes to proper playback and compatibility i.e., what DVD players play it back OK vs Not being able to play it back OK.Originally Posted by dwisniski
