1) vcr audio output -> pc audio input not connected
2) windows audio mixer - line input disabled or muted -
zootedlooter,
Just a couple of sanity checks to make.
You mentioned a line out connector on your sound card and that is fine but typically (as is in my case) the VHS sound outputs are connected to your sound cards input connectors (aka line-in or microphone or ?) and that the sound volume for recording is turned up for these inputs. This last point has bit me a couple of times. -
ok guys....i am connecting through an external capture card...via a usb 2.0 connection
but i did go through the control panel to check the sound card
the line in on the soundcard is not disabled nor is it muted.... -
Did you turn up the volume in MovieFactory and Windows Volume Control? Also make sure that the USB device is the source of the audio(not line-in).

I use an avertv usb2 device here .
Video to capture device to usb2 port
Audio to "line-in" ONLY . (you will need an adapter ... rca to stereo headphone jack)
Dont do it the way you are using ...
Having tested many internal and external devices for recording video , covering pci , usb2 , and vivo ... you will find better picture quality if the audio is NOT passed through the same device .
Set device for audio as line-in for recording .
