I have a bunch of episodes of a couple TV shows that I'd like to watch on my home DVD player.

These files all play perfectly on my Computer but they either won't play at all on the DVD player (It's a Yahoo RetroMetro DVD player - Divx support with USB and memory card reader) or they give me an 'unsupported video' message on the screen.

Bear with me as I don't know alot of stuff about this; e.g. what's the difference between Divx and Xvid? My guess is that these files are some newer format of .avi that my DVD player can't detect.

Is there some way to convert these files into a different, more compatable format of Divx so thatI can watch them?

Thanks in advance for the help!

    Mpeg4 , either divx or xvid .

I have tested other mpeg4 codecs ... xvid / divx come out better .

    -------------------

You , as I mentioned to another forum user ... cannot just burn any avi to media , and expect these players to pickup the slack ... a pc will play anything provide the correct decoder's have been installed .

Simple to start off ... grab gspot , and write down the spec's for each clip ... the format scale , width an height .

Download super or avi recomp , found in tools section on site ... reasonably straight forward conversion to more suitable format ... though scaling is another thing .

Output as xvid or divx + mp3 audio .

    -------------------

Problem can come down where in order to keep format scale , you need to box the video ... once converted , this can be done using virtualdub , filters , resize ... do a search on vdub and direct stream copy will turn up all you need to know .

There might even be a resize/box aviscript that super can use so you dont need to repeat this in vdub ... you'll need to visit that part of the forum for info , as I dont recall it off hand .

    -------------------

The remaining issue is "fps" ... while dvd players that support mpeg4 / divx here play both pal and nstc ... there may be issue's with different frames per second generated from avi's ... something not answered yet as far as I know .

To be safe ... get super to do the fps conversion at the same time ... it's almost spot on (ulead video studio is spot on) ... ebay ... 8se or 9se ... cheap .

    ------------------

Once you have got to this stage , and all converted to xvid or divx with mp3 audio ... you can burn the to media .

Some players support folder navigation which can be handy .

If you want several to play one after the other ... use vdub too append each clip ... set both video and audio to dirrect stream copy ... save as new avi ... and let it do the job .

A hint : Never use VBR audio (vdub will warn you if this is detected) ... use only CBR ... less problem's .

The easy way: Run them thru AutoGK, set in ESS compatibility mode. Done.

    Thanks for the help guys!

I'm going to try AutoGK first.

So do I just install it and run my file through it or do I need to change some settings first?

(In advanced settings when I click on Codec/Divx - it says not installed, using Xvid. Is that okay?)

Yes it is. But as mentioned, use the ESS compatibility mode.
