A) Video converting all pretty new to me
B) 3 hours of attempts and can't seem to find related posts or the ffmpegx how tos to tell me exactly what I'm doing wrong
C) using eMac OS 10.3.9, 767MB of ram
Ripped with MTR 2 versions of a single anime episode from DVD with Japanese audio and, I think, the English subtitles with it (or I screwed up already?)
Version 1) I did not touch the D button. result
Folder inside which is a single .VOB file and an EMPTY VIDEO_TS
(why don't get any of the other files (VS_01_0.IFO, .BUP) from MTR that see in example of how to go from DVD to avi on ffmpegx page??)
Load into ffmpegx ... click load VOB subtitles, 1, Burn, ... hit Play ... audio&picture fine, NO subtitles (I tried other "tracks" besides 1, same result)
Tried Extract subtitle file and I got VOB.ff.idx AND .VOB.ff.sub as a result
I then hit Load for either of these files, hit PLay and still no subtitles showing
Version 2) Used D (demux) button and got a folder with a
EN-SUBPIC1.SPC file, JA 2 CH-1.AC3 file and a .m2v file (and that's ALL)
Pic the VOB for the video, pick load subtitle and load .AC3 in audio, hit Play and all I get is the video, no audio, no subs - WHY?? Shouldn't it load them in? Or is loading them in but doesn't like them?
Have to mux first?? If so, can do with ffmpegx?
So what and/or where am I d/going wrong?
Any solutions, pointers, reference guides be greatly appreaciated. Thanks!

Forget route 2 and go back to route 1. First, check if the VOB that you extracted actually contains subtitles. For that, open the VOB file in ffmpegX, enable "vob subtitles" in the filters tab, and click PLAY. Try with various subtitle numbers if there are subs in different languages.

Ok. I checked the numbers that came up (0-31?!) and hit Play. No titles showing up.
I didn't get the subtitle track when I used MTR then (right?).
So how extract the subtitle track without MTR creating separate streams (as when hit D button)?
I couldn't find anything useful in the MTR PDF manual.
IF titles had shown up on a given track number when hit Play, you keep the VOB subtitle box checked to that track and then pick Burn or to make an idx file to have the subtitles included when convert, right?
Thank-you!!!
