I'm trying to re-install another MOBO into an old PC case. When placed the MOBO into the case it WILL NOT powered-up. Placed the MOBO outside the case, powers come right on. Seems like the Case has some kind of electrical charge. How do I need to remove this charge..? Perhaps? Any suggestions. Caution?

    Thanks in advance.

the motherboard is making contact with the backplate causing a short, most likely. Make sure the standoffs are positioned properly.

  3. There are a few variations of MOBO format, like ATX, miniATX, NLX.etc. The number of standoff can be different. Make sure you remove any unsued metal standoff. Check the metal washers and make sure they are not causing electrical short too.

You can also change the metal standoffs to nylon standoffs to aviod this problem.

I would be careful with that as motherboards use those metal standoffs as part of the RF ground for the motherboard. It likely wouldn't cause any problems, but it is part of the design.

Of course any standoffs that are in the wrong position and contact areas of the motherboard not meant as standoff attachment points should be removed. Your motherboard manual should diagram all the attachment points. If not, it's easy enough to see them.

  5. I think you means RFI(radio frequency Interference), and not RF, since PC is not a radio transmitter.

RFI and EMI are constrained mostly by the sheet metal of the PC enclosure. The RFI residue will be grounded by the power supply ground drained back to the PC supply.

You can retain the three metal standoffs near the top edge of the MOBO because they may mattered.

PC is goverened under FCC part 15 class B. If you still can watch your TV with your PC on, you passed your own requirement.

Note : If you have access to Kyton tape, you can use it to isolate any potential short via the bottom of the PC casing, and standoff.

Yikes! Why was the "Forum Troll" or whatever name he went by, banned for his advice?

Sounds correct to me. I thought the same thing about the stand-offs as i once had that problem happen to me.

Specifically i figured the stand-offs were solely to position the Motherboard the right way, and when i saw the MOBO set right in the case without them, i did'nt see a reason to put them. Was'ent till later on after a few BIG headaches, that i realized about the "shorting" out problem caused by not putting the stand-offs there.

Learned my lesson, and i could understand why newbie comp builders could also overlook the IMPORTANT role the stand-off plays as i once did.

He wasn't. The "Banned" and red card is part of his avatar, the moderator comment fake, part of his sig. He's just pulling our common leg.
