Hey I got a problem with codecs, if I setup divx or any other codec it doesn't show picture but I can hear the audio of the file. I got installed only xvid codec and it plays some of the .avi files but the rest needs the divx codec. Somebody told me I got to format the windows and install again so I can be able to play the files. Is there any way to fix the problem without format? I tried to play the files with BS Player, Winamp, VLC Player, Windows Media Player Classic, Micro DVD and Real Player Gold but I couldn't get it working. Can somebody help me fix the problem?
    Thanks in advance.

VLC uses its own codecs, so if your videos don't play properly (or at all) with it, the video files themselves may be bad.

XVid should theoretically be able to handle DivX files. I don't really see why you'd need to format and reinstall at this point, unless you've installed codec packs.

I tried many codec packs but since none of them working I uninstalled them, I tried VLC a while ago but I can't open the files.

  4. Start -> All Programs -> Xvid -> Configure Decoder -> FourCC Support

    Enable all of them.

  6. Installing and uninstalling codec packs causes all kinds of problems. They typically install conflicting filters and codecs and don't completely clean up after themselves when uninstalled.

Reinstalling Windows may be your best solution at this point.

Codec packs = Playback and System problems much of the time. You could try Codec Sniper and see if it can clean up the mess, but if it's really messed up, a system reinstall may be the best answer. And never go near a codec pack again. If VLC doesn't work, you have major problems.

One other thing to try with XP, do a system restore to a date before all your problems. If no help, then repartition, reformat and reinstall the OS.

And you might look into a program like Ghost or True Image. They will restore your system if you have done bad things. Well worth it if you like to try new programs that may damage your system and much faster than a reinstall.

And when you get it all straightened out, use a program like Gspot 2.60 to find what codecs you need for your videos. Then install only those.

Download GSpot and run the program. Load in one of your problem AVI files.
Note the message under Video - Status
Click MS A/V 1 & 2 for test and solution

This program should tell which codec are required to play the file and if they are installed.

    Another nice program is AVICodec.

    Good luck.
