Forgot to mention that it is happening with all types of videos including playing straight from a DVD

    Here are some specs

    OS:Windows XP
    Processor:AMD Athlon Dual Core 64
    Graphics Card: NVIDIA Ge-Force 6600

The only codec pack i know i have installed is DivX and XVid, I have recently updated drivers for the card which was last week

And it is only the Vids that are dim and nothin else

  3. All those programs use hardware overlay. Check your graphics driver's overlay settings.

  6. That dialog says "Overay is disabled". You need to enable overlay for those controls to work.

Nvidia always seems to screw up the overlay settings when you update drivers. The thing to do is disable overlay, close the dialog, reenable overlay, then adjst the settings.

Computer monitors are very different than TVs. Video that looks fine on a TV will look dark and over saturated on a computer monitor.
