Hi I am a first time converter and tried converting a .MP4 movie to a .AVI so that I can play it on my Philips DVP642. However, the 700 MB MP4 converted to a 1.31 GB AVI. I used SUPER and chose DivX and MP3 as the video/audio codecs. Am I doing it wrong? How can I keep the size/quality the same? Also another thing I noticed was that after converting it the AVI would have flickers in it, where everything would flicker every so often.

    Thanks for your help

Lower the video bitrate in SUPER, use a bitrate calculator to calculate the output file size. https://www.videohelp.com/tools?s=1#1

And convert to same frame rate as the source, like 23.967 to 23:976fps.

Identify the mp4 source with MediaInfo or Yamb.

So if I lower the bitrate will the quality become worse or will it stay th e same?

If the video is MPEG-4 Part2, then you can just demux to avi. No need to re-encode.

heh. Thanks but I am not sure what demux means. When I mouse over it it says: Split the audio and video. I don't know how that will help me really...Maybe you can explain something really quick? I tried looking at the guides but there is only 1 guide on MP4 which doesn't explain why I would want to demux the file.

    Thanks

    (sorry for the noob questions)

DivX is MPEG-4 Part 2, so basically if the video is MPEG-4 Part 2, then it may already be compatible (the 642 doesn't support qpel, some CQM's, etc.). So why would you want to demux/remux the video? To save time and quality.

Alright makes sense. How can I demux it? Also I am thinking of just converting it to a DVD. I am using ConvertXtoDVD but I get an error with avcodec.dll

    Thanks

Before you try and demux, you need to rewind and go back to my first post where I said "if it is MPEG-4 Part 2". Could be AVC.

As for the error with convertx, you could update avcodec if they would release the source for their modifications (as legally required). Maybe that would fix the problem since ffmpeg is being updated all the time. mp4 parsing/decoding is working fine here at least via ffmpeg. I guess wait for an official VSO update or use something else.

    Hi,
You could make it really easy and try MP4Cam2AVI (look in the Tools Section) it will convert the Audio only to mp3 and leave the video alone, it works great and people use it all the time to make their MP4 files playable in set tops.
