Hello everybody, I´m new to this forum and I study cinema. Down here in Brazil I´m currently working on a project whose objective is to create a random access DVD.
Although the random concept is very simple, there is one issue we´re anticipating, which is the following:
Our movie predicts 14 sequences, but only 5 of those has to be shown, randomly. I know that DVD players have the random function, but it apllyes to all chapters of the movie, not only to a limited number of them.
I'd like to know if it is possible to determine this "limited random access" through a DVD Authoring Tool, such as Maestro (please, remember that a legal copy of such specific program is very hard to find in my country, so it's very frustating not having it easily in every software store), or the solution resides in some other unthinked way.
Each and all tips are welcome.
thanks in advance.

What you need to do can only be programmed, so a higher end authoring tool with this facility will be required.
Tools to consider would include
Maestro
Scenarist
DVD Lab Pro
DVD Studio Pro
There is also a specialist tool for developing games using the DVD structure, but I can't find the link at the moment.Read my blog here.

Thanks guns1inger
I'll check those softwares up, and if you come up with the link you've mentioned, I'd be very grateful...
Thanks again...

What do you mean by "I'd like to know if it is possible to determine this "limited random access" through a DVD"?
But I think I understand what you need. You would need to isolate those 5 Sequences in a Pre or Post command of a PGC. By this I mean give each sequence a value in a GPRM. Then, tell the player to come up with a number between 1 & 5 - based on it's response you would send the player to one of the sequences.
Hope this makes sense?
And Gunslinger - here's that program you mentioned:

It's something like that, videopoo...
actually, one you run the DVD, the player randomly selects 5 of 14 sequences and plays them as it pleases. The movie script is being adjusted to work on this platform, I mean, everytime you run the DVD, it shows one story slightly or completely diferent from another.
And sorry, I'm not sure what PGC or GPRM means, I'm kind of a newbie on authoring...
I'll check the link you provided out, thanks a bunch.
