I just ran what seems a handy utility called Sherlock (to complement GSpot and AVIcodec), which I obtained here
http://www.updatexp.com/sherlock-codec-detective.html
It reported one codec was broken::
"DivX MPEG-4 DVD Video Decompressor
The driver file for this codec was not found.
This probably means the codec was not uninststalled properly."
How do I proceed please? The codec wasn't in Add/Remove, and I'm darned if I know what program it 'belongs' to...

you might try codec sniper to see if it can clean it up.

In Windows go to "Start / Control Panel / Sounds and Multimedia" and chose fan: "Hardware"
Move down and open: "Video codecs"
Then chose fan "Properties" and select the codec and hit the remove button.

Thanks, appreciate the fast reply. But as you see, that list doesn't seem to include the one in question:Originally Posted by politiken

Thanks. But I got error message (in German?) on running it.Originally Posted by Forum Troll

Yes, thanks, does that square with what I've now found? I used a program called DS Filter Manager, which showed it as having a 'merit' of 'Preferred'. For the time being I've changed that to 'Do not use'. Can't say I really know what I'm doing though! In particular, would still like to know what program installed this codec.Originally Posted by celtic_druid

Would have come with DivX. Either that or it came with something else that licensed or "borrowed" the decoder.
Any of these apps give a path/name of the missing filter?
Re installing DivX should re-register it. -
Excellent, thanks - that seems to have fixed it. After I re-installed DivX, Sherlock ran without reporting any 'broken'. Then I ran DS Filter Manager and changed the 'merit' of this DivX MPEG-4 thing (listed in the DirectShow section) back to Preferred. Closed that and re-ran Sherlock. Still no 'broken'. Hopefully there won't be any side effects. And who knows, it might even have fixed some of the quirks I've been getting in MemoriesOnTV!Originally Posted by celtic_druid
