The new Canon Pixma iP4300 prints on CD/DVDs out of the box, which is a first for Canon in North America. I say North America, but I'm puzzled by something: Canon's Canadian site specifies this feature, but Canon's US site makes no mention of it. Is standard CD/DVD printing only for Canadian models, or is there anyone who bought a US model who can confirm it works there too?

It's available in Canada at Staples.ca.

that what they send to me

Thank you for writing to Canon technical support. We value you as a
Canon customer and appreciate the opportunity to assist you.

We regret any confusion concerning specifications for the iP4300
    printer.

Globally, Canon is comprised of many different sales divisions. Each
sales division makes their own business decisions as to the products and
features they feel will help them achieve their goals and best suit
their market. Canon USA has made the decision not to include the
CDR/DVD printing feature on consumer printers sold in this market. We
do not have any further information as to reasons.

I guess US versions of the iP4300 will have to continue to be hacked.

    Here's how: http://pixma.damnmachine.com/119/2006/10/05/canon-pixma-ip4300-cd-printing-instructions.html

In fact, the iP4300 looks a lot like my iP3000, which I hacked using a similar method and which continues to work just fine. The only major difference there seems to be is that my iP3000 uses the much cheaper BCI-3xx carts.

Last week i bought an iP4200..Euro enabled for CD/DVD printing and bought a tray...
    I'm sooooooooo happy....

You can see how upset i was when i read the Staples flyer and the iP4300 model...
But read carefully at the bottom..Included in the box doesn't include the tray...

I'll have to assume it needs to be hacked also...

According to the manual you can download from Canon.ca, the tray is included.

  9. I did not. Eagle25s did.

I will be in Quebec City next month. I may buy a Canon inkjet there, if I can find a way to refill the ink.

I think that that simply means that you can't see the status of the ink via software...

Since the cartridges are see through, i don't think it will matter...

Canon's own refills are very reasonably priced at my local Staples and they last a long time too so I don't bother with own brands.

My only gripe with the Canon is that LabelPrint doesn't support Verbatim's oversized print surface of 119mm so I have to use third-party labelling software with a custom template.

And before anyone suggests it (there's always one) you can't expand Canon's own label template beyond 118mm.

    Which one?

just by the $99 epson photo r220 for built in, very easy and excellent cd/dvd printing. use
hub printable, one click to drop your background circle to the template using the easy software,
couldn't be easier! **in print settings, make sure to select cd/dvd "premium surface" if you are
using a high res photo and you'll get amazing results! best hub printable, clear to the outer edge, highest quality is the verbatim media. otherwise, use ritek/ridata. in any case, buy the spindles from supermediastore.com. if you only use the printer for the discs, the ink will last very very long!

  15. I think the truth is that in USA epson holds the patent on inkjet printing on CDR/DVD, sad for most users as the have only the Epson which is *probably* overpriced as a result. 5 stars from me for Canon Ip3000.
patenting as a form of monoploy protection, thank god they didnt invent the microprocessor..

$51 for the CMY colours alone..
I can get a local refill (breaking the chip) for $21 on the three colours..
Perhaps i should order them from England

I don't mind that...It's the fact that i can't print anything smaller than about 43mm...
Is this the printer of software limitation??
    Anybody know?
On a side note, i created a master template within Photoshop to correct dimensions of the Verbatim non-hub printables..The outer and inner holes aren't concentric when i drop the image onto the Canon software...
    Quite strange...

    @masterpug..
The reason i went with the iP4200 is the numerous complaints about the Epsons, and the many praises of Canon...Primarily speed and worn out CD tray, and of course ink..

  17. Is there an easy way to compute the cost per print of all these photo printers coming out? Wtih in-store pricing at 13 to 19cents/print, I'm wondering which way is more economical (and for that matter, better quality).
At 50$ a refill(I'm sure it's cheaper somewhere else, but lets say worst case) that means you would need to get 263 4x6 prints (at 19cents ea.) per refill to equall the cost of bringing it to cosco/walgreens etc.

gotcha, but as a fairly heavy user of the epson r220 (great for home movie dvd media printing)
i can say it's never failed me and keeps on workin' with no issues. you won't be disappointed and
    won't have to hack anything.

You forgot to add the cost of photo paper.
Plus the fact that prints from Costco/Walgreens will be water proof and last longer.

The only time I use my photo printer for photos is when I'm doing custom sizes.
4x6 and 5x7 prints are all done at a store.

    Hi/Bonjour, Neighbour.

Is there a Car Ferry that run between Old Quebec city to Montreal ?

Note : I drove that trip, a few years ago in a SUV, it was a pretty rough ride. I am looking for a easier way to get there.

You can download the canon software for printing to CD for free. It is simple and works well. I modded my ip3000 almost 2 years ago and use a cd tray I made from a cereal box. Works great.

You can buy OEM-compatible carts for the chipped Canons here, and this is how you can get them to work:

I used Espon printer a couple years ago for CD/DVD print. The
tray jamed a few times even before its original set of inks
running out. I gave up the printer and bought a Canon. I am
so happy that it has not jammed once yet. And its ink is so
    easy to refill.

    Bonjour neighbor,
Yeah, once winter sets in up here, our transportation options become somewhat limited, eh.

Actually, there is a cruise/ferry, but it continues on much farther down the Saint Lawrence River, it doesn't appear to be possible just to go Montreal <-> Quebec City, and it's pretty expensive.

  27. I have an Epson Stylus Photo 820 that I want to toss out because of the ink getting dried up all the time. I have a lot of Epson glossy photo paper left over. I am wondering if Epson photo paper would work in a Canon iP4300 printer? Thanks.

  28. I have both a Epson r200 with a CIS and a Canon Pixma Ip4000(did the mod and got the tray to print cd/dvd. Epson paper works with the canon. I tried a couple of glossy photo papers and Epson is the one i like best so far.
