  1. I notice that some DVD players can play DVIX and XVID, and I'm curious what exactly that means.

I always convert AVIs to MPEGs and then burn a DVD before watching it on my DVD player, but that's a lot of work. Are there any players that can just play an AVI burned directly to disc? I prefer to watch movies with my DVD player and TV.

If I'm totally wrong here, please don't bite!

Those that says that they are DIVX compatible will do what you want, but the DIVX files have some requirements to them (no QPELs, no open GOPs, etc.) You should try your files first if you do have such a player.

Generally they play Divx or Xvid encoded material, under certain restrictions. Those restrictions vary from model to model. They also support subtitles in various formats, multiple audio tracks and other features. Some players play a very wide range of formats.

Yes,, there are players that will play AVI files..

I amm so sure of this, because I have one..

I just burn the AVI file onto a dvd disk as a DATA file, ( using nero), put the disk into the dvd player and away it goes..

  5. Cool! Can anyone recommend good recorders that play AVIs?

How about this the Panasonic DMR-ES15S?

Your best bet would be to do a search in the DVD Players section for divx capable players and read the comments.

Divx.com also has (or used to) a list of officially certified divx players.
