If you are asking if it's possible to edit or change subtitles on a DVD without re-encoding, then no, AFAIK. On a DVD the subtitles are part of the VOBs and to change their format, you would have to re-encode the VOBs.

Certain kinds of changes, such as removing the subtitle parts for the hearing impaired, such as, "[gunshot]", can be done with the vobs on the hard drive, without actually demuxing. Other kinds of changes, such as correcting the spelling, will require an OCR to a text based sub format, such as SRT or SSA, followed by a reauthor and replace.
But whatever you have in mind, you'll have to decrypt the DVD to the hard drive, and later burn to a fresh DVDR. Maybe if you were more specific about what you want to do, we can be more specific about how to do it. -
All right, I'll be as specific as I can. I want to edit the subtitles on my DVD. I want to be able to save the changes on that same disk instead of making a new DVD. Is it possible?

Of course you need another disc. It can't be more specific...
i'm moving this to the subtitle forum instead. -
1. If the disc you have is a commercial disc, you cannot write to it. Period
2. If the disc you have is a DVD+R or DVD-R it can only be written to once, and you used that up writing the DVD to it the first time.
3. If the DVD is a DVD-RW or DVD+RW then you can write to it again, however you need to copy everything to the HDD, make your changes, erase the DVD disc, and write the changes back.
Is this specific enough ?Read my blog here.

If you have a Divx file, you could probably edit the subs easily as they are on another file.

How can I tell what type of file disc it is? Or Divx, what that?
-
If its a *.avi its probably divx.....
Of course you would also have the subtitle files, which are .srt or .sub & .idx
