    Not sure which forum (if any) might be appropriate....

    Borrowed my brother's MiniDV camcorder and shot up lots of nice footage.
    He had the audacity to take it back, and I had not copied off the material - leaving me with no way to view the tapes for the near future.

    Obviously I was remiss in neglecting to dub off the stuff while I had the camcorder. With my butt suitably populated with kick bruises, I must inquire as to whether there is a "minidv player" or other alternative to my buying a minidv camcorder.

    you probably want to buy an inexpensive miniDV cam, not a miniDV player. decks are designed for editing and start at a couple grand US$. don't even think of a used one off ebay, they are not the most durable item, you'd be asking to be taken.

    Thanks - that explains why my preliminary searches came up with decks which - exactly as you said - start at a couple grand.
