  1. Hi All

I have been playing AVI files for a long time using VLC and there have been no problems. However, I have latley been finding that most movies are hitting a certain point and the picture is stopping (the sound carrys on). It seems like there is a break in the file and it crashes.

Anyone know why I shoudl have this as such a big problem when it didn't use to be? Also how can I patch up these files? I have downloaded GOM because I hear it helps with broken AVI's but it seems GOM doesn't play a lot of the file types that are broken.

Any ideas whats happening and how to fix it?

    Cheers

If it has only recently started happening, my first thought would be either you really need to defragment your HDD, or your HDD is on the way out.

I would start by running a scandisk in thorough mode. Once this completes, defragment the entire drive. If it is really bad you may have to defragment it more than once.

After that, try watching the videos again. If they have been corrupted then all you can do is throw them out and start again, or spend time trying to edit out the corruption.

Load the AVIs in VirtualDub or DivFix, and see if either has problems with the index of the AVI files. I think GSpot (version 2.52 or better) should also be able to tell if an AVI's index has errors.

Are these avi files created from combining multiple avi files?
