VirtualDubMod works good for movies with AC3 sound.

Otherwise, it creates an .MP3 file that is useless for DVD Lab pro.

What is the best (quality) software to do this? I am willing to pay for it if it worths the money!

    Thanks.

Actually, virtualdubmod will export to any format you have codecs for, just like video. Goto Streams->StreamList. Right-click on the audio and select Full Processing. Right-click again and select Compression. Set a compression type. If you want AC3, but currently have mp3, I suggest you select uncompressed PCM wav. Click OK, then click on Save Wav.

Use ffmpeggui to create an AC3 for for using DLP

It was discovered a long time ago (and it still is the case today) that the best way to extract MP3 audio from a MPEG-4 (DivX/XviD) AVI file is to load the AVI file into GOLDWAVE ... then save the audio as a PCM WAV file.

Works better than any other method I have tried.

Unfortunately GOLDWAVE is not freeware ... you must pay for it ... but it is trailware and you can use it for a LONG time before it locks up on you ... at that point you must buy it and register it to continue use.

so GOLDWAVE creates better quality .WAV's than VirtualDubMod?

Well I guess VDubMod would use the Fraunhofer ACM decoder that comes with windows. There are arguably better quality decoders, all of them free. For instance you could use mplayer to decode via mad.

I can't see any reason to use Goldwave. If you are using ffmpeg, the AC3 encoder is far from perfect so I doubt you would notice any difference between decoders anyway.

The point to using GOLDWAVE is that VirtualDub doesn't handle VBR MP3 very well and with GOLDWAVE you don't have any of those issues.

Maybe there are other methods now but "back in the day" GOLDWAVE was really the only "fool proof" way of getting VBR MP3 out of an AVI file.

What about avi decompressor or whatever it was called? Basically used dshow to dump a wav, so if it played ok, then it would decode ok. That was around years ago. mplayer is also far from new.
