I have bought this player (Toshiba SD-6980SU) - Region 1. I have read that owners of the same 6980 but Region 4 players where able to make it region free using the code from the Samsung player for that region. Using the codes from Samsung on my R1 player won't work so I was thinking that is a hardware change.
Please, can somebody with the Region 4 (or other than 1), post a photo of the PCB near the firmware chip?
I am posting a photo of my PCB with the interest area circled in red.
Thank you!

Hi, I bought the same model (region 1) in USA and I have the same problem.
Firmware revision: same as the label in Sorinicu post, CS:CC5D, "H"
Firmware revision (as press to "program" key without disc): "Current revision: 062405.00.ffffsd6980"
Fabrication date: september 2005.
I probe codes for Toshiba and Samsung, but these do not work.
somebody has more information?
Thanks, Daniel.
