  1. I am not a Newbie in converting AVIs to SVCD compatible MPEG2 files. But the program i am using (Videopack 5) doesn't have the quality of picture and sound i prefer.

So I am searching for an other way to convert my AVIs.

I read that Virtual Dub doing it at a very good quality.

So I tried it, but when I open AVIs I get the following error message:

I have read all FAQs about Virtual Dub but cannot fix the problem for myself. (I have used AUXSETUP.exe before opening the file to add the AVI-drivers to my system)

    Any ideas?

    Thanks in advance.

  3. IGuaNAdoN: Thank you for your fast help.

But I am sad, because this is not working. The same error message after fixing the files with the tool.

    Any other ideas?

  4. I beletve what you need is to use a program like AVISynth to feed you DV file into VirtualDub. After installing AVISynth, you then create a simple text file with the extension .AVS - what happens is AVISynth intersepts the DV/AVI data and then translates it into a format that VirtualDub can easily recognize.

It also allows you to use files that are bigger than 2 Gigs.
    You can find it here:

    http://www.math.berkeley.edu/~benrg/avisynth.html

make sure you read everything and if you need more help, look for some guides at http://www.doom9.net

  6. Thoka, you can try to install a VFW-compatible DV codec VirtualDub, it was floating somewhere in the 'net. But even with this codec, VirtualDub will be able to read DV video but not sound.

I have solved this problem by extracting audio from DV video into separate .wav file with Ulead Audio Editor (part of Ulead MediaStudio Pro) and then selecting Audio -> WAV audio... from VirtualDub menu and browsing for extracted audio.

I have tried Avisynth, but for some reason it has stopped opening DV video even with VFW codec installed.

Oh, somebody who is using MEDIA STUDIO too. )

Great. Perhaps you can give me a hint... I think you produce SVCDs from your selfmade films, too?!

I have used ROXIOs VIDEOPACK 5 for converting my AVIs to SVCD compatible mpeg2 format. The soundquality is my only problem: it sounds bad, like 64kbit compressed MP3s.

Perhaps you have had the same problem... I am searching for a way to fix it.

I am using VIDEOPACK, because it offers me a menu structure on a SVCD (and of course VCD)... perhaps there is another program that doing the same, but without the bad audio quality after encoding. (I tried to convert AVI to MPEG2 files with the specifications VIDEOPACK needs... but VIDEOPACK does not accept it. The MUXRATE of the MPEG2s is the problem. It must be exactly 6972 for VIDEOPACK. And if the MUXRATE isn't exactly 6972, VIDEOPACK starts to convert the mpeg2 file to make it 6972... and then the soundquality is bad. I have used TMPGENC to convert the AVIs to MPEG2 format before adding the files in VIDEOPACK)

Perhaps you knew a way to get around this problem, or another program with better quality after conversion?

    Thanks in advance.

  8. Sorry, Thoka, pity to disappoint you, but I create XVCDs.
My player just does not play SVCDs. I use TMPGEnc with tooLAME as an external tool for audio encoding. I create menus manually and use VCDImager to create VCD image.

Have you tried Ulead DVD Plug-in (integrates into MediaStudio, allows to create (S)VCD with episode selection menus, one movie per VCD) or Ulead DVD MovieFactory (no one-movie-per-VCD limitation)?

  9. Dethroner:

I dont know "tooLAME" for TMPGenc... where can I get this tool... perhaps it fixes my soundproblems. (?)

    Thanks in advance!

The ULEAD Plugins I dont know too. But I will visit the ULEAD website to inform me. )

And... isn't it heavy work for you to create your XVCDs manually?

  10. Here is the Home of tooLAME. There is also Win32 executable download here. All you need is to extract the executable, run TMPGEnc, go to Option -> Environmental settings..., select External tool tab, check Layer-2 and type in (or browse) path to tooLAME executable.

Creating XVCD manually of course, requires more work than with some tools - especially when I need episode selection menus etc. But there are not much tools that support XVCD (I have recently checked the Ulead DVD MovieFactory and it does!). Manual creation gives more flexibility, I can build XVCD navigation the way I want it. In addition, it is not required to have episode selection menu to be able to navigate between the episodes! There is a solution that allows you to create (X)VCD that has no menus, but allows navigation between episodes with numeric keys. In this case, the amount of work is the same with any tools. And of course, I don't create XML for VCDImager manually, I use VCDComposer for this.
