    Greetings.

I am extremely skilled with computers, I have my own small business. This is something I could not figure out. Perhaps you gurus could help me out.

Apparently any and all .mpg files on my computer will not play in any version so far of Windows Media Player. I have tested them out in virtualdub, media player classic, and a few other players, and they work fine, no problem. The interesting part is that the files will play in WMP with no problems ONLY if they are played from the internet. I've done this several times with no problem. Once I download the file though, and double click it afterwards, it comes up with that stupid "general" error C00D11CD. I have uninstalled all codecs, including divx, ffdshow, and rolled back to WMP9, then reinstalled each one by one, nothing. I don't think it's codecs though, since the video plays from the net.

    Anyone got any ideas?

    Thanks so much,
    JB

Is it WMP that throws the "general" error C00D11CD? Even if IE uses WMP to play mpg, Windows may have .mpg associated with some other app?

It is indeed WMP that throws it to me. You can read people's frustrations about it here: http://www.updatexp.com/c00d11cd-error.html. I even tried clicking on an mpeg through IE, letting it play, not closing WMP, saving that very file from the WMP save option, leaving WMP open, double-clicking the file from my own hard drive. "Windows Media Player encountered an unknown error."

    Weird, eh?

    Any ideas?

    Thanks so far,
    JB

Well, I may not be the right person to guide you, as I gave up WMP long ago. It's simply too error prone, not to say bulky.
Associate mpg with something like VLC or mediaplayer classic and forget you ever had to deal with WMP...

I would do this, but I feel a general need, being in the computer business, to figure out what is causing this problem. It never happened before, so something must have been done to cause this.

I appreciate your help, though. Anyone else got any ideas?

  7. Do you have a DirectShow MPEG2 decoder? Programs like Media Player Classic and VirtualDubMod have their own MPEG2 decoders, but WMP does not and Windows does not ship with one. Most people get one by installing DVD player software. Try this one:
