I have an SVCD version of Shrek on 2 discs.

I have friends who can't play SVCD so I wanted to convert it to VCD. As the file was just under 83 mins if I cut it, I had worked out if I reduced the audio to 160kbps it would fit on an 80 min CD.

I copied the 800 Mpeg file from the first disc to my hard drive.

I then tried adding it to TMPGEnc for conversion but the program locked up? (I have a Duron 800 with 256 MB)

I tried VCD gear as I understand the Mpeg file is like a dat file on a VCD. I have an error on the mpeg which if I set to correct with VCD gear I just got a totally corrupted file? If I left the correction off the file converted and played fine. I then added this file which would also lock up but I found after many attempts that if I left the computer it would un-freeze and add the file.

Then TMPGEnc did not add the audio? I had to de-multiplex the audio and then add it! I set it going and when it got to the error in the Mpeg it failed!!. The error was not bad with a only a bit of blocking. As VCD Gear and the newer GUI? would not fix the errors (are they only meant for VCD?) I ended up de-multiplexing the mpeg into audio/video and converting the mp2 file to 160kbps Mp3 and then using TMPGEnc. After lots of attempts I finally got the first Mpeg to convert!!.

    The Second Mpeg!

I have even more problems with the second disc!! I had and error which was worse!. I had the same problems as before but it would not convert past the error. I ended up cutting the end (It did not cut the audio?) and then cutting the audio mp3 at the same point before adding to TMPG before conversion! I then joined the 2 files (with about 2 seconds cut out) together with VCD cutter. I then added the two files left together to get the whole file as one Mpeg file of just under 800 mb!

I then used VCD Easy to make chapters every five mins and burn to make a VCD!!!. It worked!

It has taken me about a week (I was off work until Thursday!) to get it all converted but I think is looks good (apart from the 2 second cut)

    Questions?

    1. Why does TMPGEnc have so many problems with Mpeg 2 files?
    2. Is there another program like VCD gear that will correct the Mpeg errors?
    3. Is there a better way to covert SVCD (but not to AVI as its just to big a file!)

If I new when I started I would have just ripped the DVD!.

Has anyone got anything to add?

  2. try using dvd2avi to open the mpeg2 file. select save project to frame save, and then use d2v and wav file to encode to vcd.
