I am trying to take a snippet of video from a DVD and convert it to a format that I can post onto a web page. My resulting output looks nice and the file size is reasonable, but the audio seems to be slightly out of sync, and I get a few skips in the audio.

My result looks like this: http://members.shaw.ca/jeremiad/bbeskip.avi

Okay, now let me see if I can tell you what I have done so far, and maybe someone can tell me what I have screwed up along the way?

I had the vobs sent to me, but I would assume they are copied right off of the DVD (which should be fine?), and then I used Tsunami (tmpgenc) to convert the vob to an mpeg-1 file at 320x240, 29.97fps, and a constant bitrate of 6000k/sec. I imported the resulting mpg file into Premiere, and made my cuts (I needed about 2 minutes out of the first third of the vob, which is about 20 minutes long), and then export to a movie as Microsoft avi at 320x240, 29.97fps, and Indeo 5.1 @ 85%, with audio at 22k 16-bit stereo, with Microsoft ADPCM.

The result (in part) is the above-linked file.

Does anyone know why this audio is fine on the original, but goes out of whack when output from Premiere?

It might be easier to open the VOB in VirtualDub Mod, set what you want to cut out and save it as a AVI (MPEG-4) type video with MP3 audio. That would eliminate a lot of steps and might get rid of your sync problems. You could also resize there.

And you could play those VOBs with VLC Media player without converting and see if they are in sync to start with, since it sounds like you don't have the original DVD.

Thank you very much. VirtualDubMod worked well to get the job done, and I was impressed with its speed. I wish my Premiere projects would output that quickly.

To note: The vobs play fine in PowerDVD, and do not skip or anything. The output mpg from Tsunami is also fine, so this skip did originate in Premiere.

I have actually tried it on three different machines now, and get the same skips in the same position on the timeline every time.
