  1. Heya guys... not sure what topic to put this under..

So heres the deal... I finally figured out a region free hack on my dvd player... so it plays my UK Dvd's.. yay!!!

Problem.. my TV is not PAL adaptable
Thought I solved the problem and bought a PAL to NTSC converter for 35 smackers...
Got it in the mail today woo hoo again! So I checked it out... still getting the problem with the TV.

I know the problem with the adapter.. its only for 50 hz TV (which I thought mine was.. but looked at the wrong model)

Is there a way to either a) find a hack for the tv (which I doubt) or b) change the hz setting on tv or c) find an adapter that changes the hz...

    Thanks all for the help!!

    The tv is a EWF2703

It is probably cheaper to buy a DVD player that is region free and can output NTSC regardless of the disc format.

Don't forget Region Codes and NTSC/PAL are two completely different animals. Buying another region free player will not solve the problem.

  6. Not cheap, but you could always get another TV . . .

I picked up an Advent 4:3 HDTV 27" for $399 on Black Friday at Best Buy a couple years ago - what sold me at the time was that it was NTSC but it also played PAL video if fed from the video inputs. Works fine.

Last fall I bought an Olevia 37" LCD knowing it was advertized as NTSC only. Well I live in a PAL country now and I bought a multisystem tuning VCR and an expensive multiconverter to change the video. For giggles, I put the PAL signal into the Olevia - boom, great picture, unadvertized "feature". I think many Chinese manufactured TVs now will display PAL and NTSC if fed from Video In but they don't often say so.

What exactly are we talking about here?
You hacked your DVD player in order for it to do what?
A region free hack applied to a DVD player means that the player is now Region Free OR you assigned a different region to the player.

I think the problem is this ...

Some DVD players can play a PAL DVD and output as PAL or do a conversion and output NTSC.

However some DVD players that can play a PAL DVD cannot do conversion to NTSC so when you play a PAL DVD you get PAL output.

It sounds to me that your region free hacked DVD player is now capable of playing PAL DVD discs but can only output as PAL which of course does you no good since your TV is a normal NTSC TV.

    So what to do?

Well first check the set-up menu of the DVD player. Look for something like "output" and see if you can change it at all. For instance my DVD player has a setting called "output" and I can set it to PAL, NTSC or ANY. When it is set to NTSC then the DVD player will always output NTSC even when playing back a PAL DVD. However if it is set to ANY (some DVD players use the term ALL) then it will output the format of the DVD. Play back a PAL DVD and you get a PAL output ... play back a NTSC DVD and you get a NTSC output.

So the first thing to do is to check your DVD player to see if you have such an option. It could be that it does but it is set to ANY/ALL instead of the NTSC setting (which is what you would want).

If your DVD player doesn't have this then even though you made it region free the player is outputing a PAL DVD as PAL and actually truth be told, though rare, there are some DVD players that even when made REGION FREE can still not properly playback a PAL DVD meaning when you play a PAL DVD on such a DVD player you just get garbage output ... it is neither true PAL nor true NTSC but just garbage video.

If you determine that your DVD player cannot output a PAL DVD as a NTSC signal then you are toast as far as that DVD player goes.

Better off to just buy a new DVD player that is region free and does PAL DVD to NTSC conversion.

For those on a budget the best choice would be the Philips DVP-5140 which can be bought at WALMART for around $55 US Dollars. I think SEARS also carries this model.

The Philips DVP-5140 is a REGION ONE DVD player but it has a very simple REGION FREE HACK using a "secret" remote control sequence. It also has the ability to output a PAL DVD as a NTSC signal so that you can watch any region DVD on any normal NTSC TV be it a standard defination TV or a HDTV.

So-called stand alone video converters (that can do PAL to NTSC) usually almost always do a poor job of it and this applies even to the more expensive models that can be $500 or more US Dollars.

Better to have the DVD player do it as it does it better for far cheaper.

If you really wanted to go "all out" the OPPO DIGITAL OPDV971H is the best DVD player on the market today for PAL to NTSC conversion. Granted it is not cheap at $200 US Dollars but you cannot get better PAL to NTSC conversion than this model. Be aware that this does NOT apply to the other OPPO DIGITAL model (I'm talking about the DV-970HD which also does PAL to NTSC and does so decently but not any better than the Philips DVP-5140).

Here is a link to the OPPO DIGITAL website: CLICK HERE

There are numerous cheap DVD players that play both PAL/NTSC discs and even output in selectable format. A couple of years ago I brought from China a BBK-993 with 'region 6' label on rear panel. My TV is PAL only but I'm able to play any region protected (not only ripped) PAL and NTSC DVDs. By default the output is NTSC (visible by no color and decreased height of jacket picture before disc is loaded) but when a PAL disc is inserted, the output automatically goes to PAL. PAL/NTSC is also switchable from remote (without disc only). Supports DVD-A (although not mentioned in description) and HDCD audio along with usual things like DTS, xvid/divx etc. Have no complaints so far.

  10. The Phlilps DVP 5960 only costs about $70, has a region free hack, and can convert PAL to NTSC on the fly.

You will not find a real standalone PAL to NTSC converter for anywhere near that price.

  11. FulciLives,

You totally rock! At least someone understood what I was sayin! Yes.. the DVD plays different regions now, but outputs it at PAL. Which blows... I did check the options but didnt find anything

    Its a panasonic f65.

Thank you again for all the help... I thought I did check the options, but I will look again!

So like I said.. the next choice is to buy the DVD player (I pasted the description) for 80 bux from amazon.

    Thanks again!

  12. Need to go and get yourself a LG or Phillips DVD player.

Pansonics and Sony DVD players never/hardly provide any NTSC/PAL flexibility.

Well I can tell you that you can forget about the Panasonic for PAL DVD Video playback. Panasonic makes their NTSC DVD players in such a way that they will not do PAL DVD to NTSC conversion. In fact if I am not mistaken I think that when playing a PAL DVD it doesn't even output real PAL but just garbage. The good news is that since you made it REGION FREE you can play NTSC DVD Videos that are of another region code. For instance most Hong Kong DVD Videos are NTSC but REGION 3 so those will play now. Also Japanese DVD Videos are NTSC but REGION 2 so those will now play. But for PAL DVD Videos ... no go on the Panasonic.

As for a REGION FREE DVD player that does PAL DVD to NTSC conversion I would go with the Philips DVP-5140 because it is pretty decent and only costs $55 at WALMART. There is no reason to go mail-order and spend more unless you are going to spend A LOT more to get something that is A LOT better than the Philips DVP-5140 and my guess is that the unit you are looking at on AMAZON.COM is no better, but more expensive, than the Philips DVP-5140. I say this because I know that to get something that performs better than the Philips DVP-5140 means spending a lot more than $80 or so.

If you want to post a link to the DVD player you are looking at on AMAZON.COM I will be glad to comment on it.

I tend to "keep up" on difference DVD player models so I can give advice as to it being a good ... or not so good ... buy.

But right now I still say that you are hard pressed to beat the price and quality of the Philips DVP-5140 unless perhaps you "step up" to the Philips DVP-5960 but truth be told the Philips DVP-5960 will only give you better quality if you have a HDTV and even then that is somewhat debatable.

  14. Why go to amazon and order when you can walk into a Walmart and get one Phillips model or walk into a Best Buy and get the Phillips 5960 for less than $80 and walk out with it? it has HDMI, Component and Composite Video out. You can even plug external drives into the USB port and play Divx/Xvid/MPG or JPGs through that port.

  15. I noticed that BestBuy.com has the DVP 5960 on sale now for $73.79. I don't know if the stores have it at the same price.
