...and in what format are the subs you have, may I ask?
And on/with what do you intend to play your AVI with subs?

It would be better if you convert the movie to a DVD-R disc.

I think you can use cnovertxToDVD, it's a very easy program, and it lets you add subtitles, and even make a simple menu.

And yes, there are DVD players that can read movies in Avi format.

..which really is the easiest method. You either just name the avi and the srt the same (except for the extension) or (on some players) you first select the subtitle to use, then the avi to play. I haven't done a AVI to DVD conversion since I bought a DivX/XviD capable player a year ago.

Ah - for computer playback? Then, ffdshow or DirectVobSub will add subtitles to an AVI using any software player that uses DirectShow. Just don't use them (ffdshow + DirectVobsub) at the same time, as you're likely to end up with 2 subtitles on top of eachother!

So, just name the .srt and .avi the same, and put them in the same directory.
Install DirectVobSub, and all players that use DirectShow (like WMP) will display the AVI with subtitles, as soon as you play the AVI.
The player itself doesn't need to have subtitle support - they are overlayed by DirectVobSub that in turn feeds the AVI to the player.
