This afternoon I updated Democracy and iSquint. Since then I cannot play most of my .avi files.
ISquint and ffmpeg still can convert them but Quicktime, MPEG Streamclip and Toast all crash when trying to open these .avi files. Some of them I've had for years.
I've tried deleting Democracy and iSquint, reinstalling Quicktime and all of my divx codecs. Nothing works.
I have OS 10.3.9, the latest version of Quicktime 7 and Toast 7.
Any idea what the problem is?

Try using VLC Media Player. If it successfully decodes the videos, then you likely have a problem with your codecs. Does this only happen with Divx? Or do you have the same problem with other MPEG4 (AVI type) codecs.
If you have the proper Divx codecs, you might go to the Divx site and see if they have any simple answers.
If you go to this page, you might find some help under 'Top 20 Issues.......':

I have no problem using the VLC Media Player. I do seem to have the same problem with all types of .avi codecs

Have you checked the contents of /Library/QuickTime and ~/Library/QuickTime ?
