    Hello,

I need to rip a DVD to my PC and edit some of the footage using Windows Movie Maker. Can anyone suggest a free ripper that would rip into a format that I can use?

I downloaded a DVD decrypter and used it to rip a dvd. I then changed the file I ripped to an MPG and I want to edit it with windows movie maker but I cannot. It (WMM) acts as if it is just an audio file, yet when I watch it with Windows Media Player, I can see video.

I don't believe WMM supports mpg input. You need to convert to DV-AVI or get a mpg editor.

If you need just cut/join editing, TMPGDVDAutor is one of the best and simple solutions. There are some limitations: single audio track, no DTS and no subtitles. To use it just drag VIDEO_TS.IFO file to source window and the wizard will prompt you the rest. You will end with new DVD folder. If you want just mpeg2 file, use TMPG MPEG Editor instead, it also has a wizard. Don't try using VOBs apart from ifo's.

I just want to use WMM. I think it does support MPEG's since my digital camera records video in that format and I've made many videos out of those clips.

How do you transfer from your digital camera to WMM ?

Simplest way to convert is virtualdubmpeg2 and the panasonic DV codec, then into WMM.

Try really converting the DVDDecrypter VOBs to mpg with vob2mpg. Just renaming them isn't really a good idea.

WMM MPEG-2 support seems to be very hit or miss - I have never been able to do it yet people here have reported that they can. My foolproof workaround is to rip, then "convert" (extract is probably better terminology) to MPEG using VOB2MPG, convert to DV-AVI using virtualdub then load the DV-AVI into WMM.
    If in doubt, Google it.

I used DVD Decrypter and then converted to MPG using VOB2MPG. Then I tried to import the MPG into Windows Movie Maker and I got the following message:

The file "could not be imported. An interface has too many methods to fire events from"

    What now?

I tried to convert using virtualdub but when I tried to import the file there, it said this:

"MPEG Import Filter: invalid pack at position 3: marker bit not set; possibly MPEG-2 stream"

Thank you. That version worked, I was able to convert to AVI and the AVI file was huge. Is there any way around that?

Use a compression under video->compression, but don't compress too much or you will lose too much quality when going to wmv. You can use dv-avi like panasonic dv codec or huffyuv, lagarith.

Thanks everyone. I'll use DVD Decrypter and then use VOB2MPG. Now I need a program to edit the MPG. I only need to cut the file and save the parts I need. I only need a few minutes of the MPG. Then I will convert to AVI using virtualdub. Import the AVI into Windows Movie Maker and take it from there.

So all I need is a simple MPG editor that will allow me to cut/trim the MPG. Any suggestions?

If I were you I would convert to DV-AVI in virtualdub first, then edit because you can then cut on any frame.
    If in doubt, Google it.

Unfortunately, the VOB file is very large. So the MPG is large as well and when I convert to AVI, it is ridiculously huge. That is why I want to edit the MPG before I convert to AVI. When I say edit, I mean just cut out 80% of the video. I just need a specific chunk of it which I would then make an AVI and do the real editing in Windows Movie Maker.

You can do your edits in Vdub-mpeg2 before you save out the new dv-avi. Mark in and out points and then delete, after you have the size you want then set "full processing", select a compression then save avi.

You obviously haven't installed the Panasonic DV codec, or haven't selected it under Video -> Compression before saving, or both.

DV space requirements are very easy to estimate - 13 GB/hour of video.

I do have the Panasonic DV codec and I did what ZippyP said (editing with Vdub). But I use lagarith compression. Thanks everyone.
