    For divx/xvid files?

How do you play them and what files do they support?

    Thx

You can set it to autodetect subs in 'Preferences'. Click the 'Advanced Options' then 'Video>Subtitles/OSD'. You should see a bunch of subtitle adjustments. You can also point it to a subtitle file.

For some subs, you start the program, then use 'File>Open File'. This will give you a window to browse to the video and also the subs. Then hit 'OK'. The sub doesn't have to be in the same place as the video. There are also some advanced sub settings there, like size.

I'm not sure what all formats of subs it detects and plays, but .srt subs work. Here's a link to the features page: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/features.html

    dmuk,
I've never got subs to show up in VLC.
I would suggest to use KMPlayer instead. It's far better than VLC (IMHO) and it will display up to 3 different subtitles at the same time.

I also had problems with showing subtitles in VLC. It's necessary to set up proper text encoding.
