Ok this happens to 5 dvds on 2 different players and still the same problem. I take an avi and convert it to dvd and burn it with nero burning rom, when the dvd is burned and i watch it where it is widescreen ( where the black is on top and bottom) is half balc and half grey on top and bottom. It is hard to explain but what it basically is is black then grey then movie then grey then black from top to bottom. It doesnt do it on my computer but it does do it on 2 diff dvd players. please help, there is a pic that is what it basically looks like

  2. The black bars are encoded in the MPEG file because the source video is wider than 16:9. The gray bars are added by the TV because the TV is taller than the MPEG file's 16:9?

Some players (and widescreen TVs) allow you to change the colour of the bars added when content does not fill the entire screen. Are these players connected to the same TV or the same brand as each other ?

My guess is that you encoded it as 16x9 WS and that the video is 2.35:1 so the black encoded into the movie is not matching the black the TV (actually the DVD player) is adding when watched on a 4:3 TV.

Classic luminance issues with your encoding. Probably a 0.0 IRE vs 7.5 IRE issue.

Or you have the brightness and/or contrast levels on your TV set way goofy.
