New DVD Writer, gives me errors when trying to burn disc.

I just bought a Pioneer DVD Writer, DVR-710 model. I just got DVD Architect 4 to burn movies. I tried burning a movie with the program and the new dvd writer. I used a DVD-R disc. This is the following error I get when it completes.

The disc remains blank, and the burning process obviously gets aborted. What is wrong with my DVD writer?

Not enough information there for me to guess. That sounds like a hardware error, but what it is, I don't know.

Have you tried backing up a video with DVDShrink and burning with ImgBurn? That might tell you if it's a hardware problem or a software problem. There's a Shrink version set up for ImgBurn: http://forum.digital-digest.com/showthread.php?t=63869

The most common problems are caused by the DVD media. Try a different brand. And you might want to tell us a little more info. The media brand for one. Also what kind of movie, what source? What steps to make the DVD?

The media is Fujifilm DVD-R. I can try DVD+R which I have had sucess with in the past. I just bought a bunch of -R discs and now have a DVD writer that can burn both. So thats the disc I tried. The movie is a 5 minute music video in mpeg format. I just wanted to try out the new program, and the new dvd writer so I just opened up architect and did a drag and drop with the movie, and then clicked on Make DVD. Thats what happened like 2 minutes later was that error.

I'll try the +R and see if that works.

EDIT: +R didnt work.

EDIT #2: I just tried the IMGburn idea. I got an I/O error and it didnt burn. So I assume its a hardware error. Any ideas?

It would be very helpful if you would do a "Test Mode" burn with ImgBurn and post the burn log here. "Test Mode" doesn't actually write to the disk, so the disk you use will still be blank, and can be used some other time. Just make sure you use a -R disk and not a +R (there is no "Test Mode" with +R).

I tried doing that and got the same error as before when I tried to write to the disc. It brings up this error:

Thanks, that's better info. You are getting a CRC error, which means the data can't be properly verified between the hard drive and the burner. It's mostly a read error.

Since you installed the burner, is it a replacement for an existing drive? If so, is it set the same way? Did you set the rear jumper to the proper position, master or slave? Did you use a 80 conductor cable?

Make sure the cable is properly seated in the sockets on the motherboard and the burner ends. A few burners need to be set to master to work properly with some systems. You can try a different channel or position. Just make sure the jumper is set right if you change positions.

Though less likely for a new drive, have you checked to see if it's in DMA mode: Control Panel>Hardware>System>Device Manager>IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers. All drives should be DMA, no PIOs. If one is PIO, uninstall that channel and reboot.

Beyond that, you could try the drive out on a different computer if one is available, making sure the jumper settings are right. If that also fails, it may be a bad burner.

Its not really a replacement, just an upgrade really. I had two drives in the system before. I took the slave out and made the master the new slave. Then I made this new Pioneer drive the new master. The previous setup had the jumpers for both drives on cable select. So thats how I installed it. Then I tried setting the Pioneer to Master and the other one to slave, with the same result. I will check the connections, but I dont think thats it. Is it not going to work properly if I use a 40 pin IDE ribbon cable, because I think thats what I have. I know it says to be able to use the 16x, you need 80, but will the drive not work with 40? Thats the only idea I can think of. The last idea with everything set to DMA, I already tried that when I did a search before I made this thread. So Im guessing its a bad drive or 40 pin does affect the drive.

That error appears to be generally connected to the IDE cable being faulty, not fully seated, or not 80 pin. If you've checked the connection on both ends, it sounds like your guess is a good one, and you need to use an 80-pin cable.

Thing is, I didnt have a problem with the two previous drives with this cable, so I doubt its faulty. I think its quite wierd that it wont work all the way with a 40 pin ide cable. They say that I wont get max speed, and for now i would be ok with that.

However, I plan to get an 80 pin cable tomorrow because I went ahead and exchanged the drive tonight and got the same error with the new drive. So it has to be the cable. I will keep you updated as to what happens.

For the retail PIONEER 710 drive "you have to use a 80 wire ide cable" or the drive will not work correctly. This drive is ULTRA DMA 4 mode not ULTRA DMA 2 mode. This is why you were having CRC Errors. This has been discussed in the PIONEER FORUM at Cdfreaks.com. This drive is the retail version of the PIONEER 111 series. If you look at the sticker on the drive you'll see "PIONEER 111D".

I have 2 of the 710 drives and they're crossflashed to the PIONEER 111L drive by using The Dangerous Brothers hacked firmware. Advantages to using it is you'll be able to have bitsetting to dvdrom for SINGLE LAYER DVD+R media and DVD RAM capabilities as well. Using stock firmware from PIONEER does not allow bitsetting to dvdrom for SINGLE LAYER DVD+R media but it does automatically bitset to dvdrom for DUAL LAYER DVD+R media. Your errors are typically hardware setup related. Follow the advice above. Install proper cable, check master/slave settings as well as DMA. Worst case scaenario: replace the drive (unlikely).
