Apparently, the preferred format for stills in Vegas is png. I'm looking for still of animals (mostly mammals) , and I'm looking for public files of any format on the web that are at least 655x480, so that if they aren't png, I can easily convert them without much loss to png. Perhaps that's an unnecessary restriction on files that are not png. Anyway, comments?

png is handy because of the transparency and the fact that it is lossless, however depending on what you need to do, Vegas will happily import many other formats.

Probably I don't need png, then for the animal use.
It's pretty easy to hunt down, say, a picture of an elephant. Google will provide hundreds if not thousands. The trick becomes one of getting something like 655x480 images out of all of them so they fill a complete frame, or at least look like some dwarf in the frame. Zooming will degreade small images. I had that happen while looking for a few images of old radios. Way more 100x70 or whatever than large ones. Suggestions?

Try some of the stock photo sites. There are some very good royalty and access free ones. I listed a few here -> https://forum.videohelp.com/viewtopic.php?t=310099

Most are taken with 5 megapixel or better cameras, so the size and quality are usually pretty good. I often visit these for DVD resources.
