First, I wouldn't use the built-in CD writing capabilities of windows. opt for a third party player. For data CD/DVD and audio CD writing you could look at CDBurnerXP Pro. It's free and works well. For DVD video you should use imgburn 2.

If you still encounter problems there is a good chance the culprit is the age of your burner. It may simply not recognise correctly newer discs. This can often the solved but updating the firmware in your burner. Check the burner manufacturer's site for firmware updates.

  3. The new Sony disks are version 2.0 I believe. Check the cake box. Funny though, an old HP 8x burner reads em fine, but a new HP dvd burner my bud has doesn't. I have 2 Maxell burners, same model made 6 months apart, and each one has a different minimum speed I can write to on those 2.0 disks.

Firmware is the only answer, but contact the company and make sure the update will definately allow you to burn to those Sony's, because flashing is NOT guaranteed, it may not take and your drive is ruined. If it works fine except for 1 brand, personally, I wouldn't flash for that.

For me Nero burns great with any media I have used, be it dvd or cdr
