Hi. I had a problem with my audio when playing any avi, mpg, wmv or any other video file. I am using a Sound Blaster sound card. If I play plain music wiht iTunes it plays well with no "static like sound" but if I play a video the statis sound comes out. I know that it's not the sound card since it plays music with no issue. It should be a codec problem. I had installed the sound driver and a codec "Divx 5 Bundle" but the statis sound remains. what other codec do I need to install to resolve this? Thanks.

    More information required

    1. Does this happen for all files, or only some ?
    2. How do you have the sound blaster connected to your speakers ?
    3. Do you have an amp in the mix ?
    4. Is it an analogue or digital audio output you are using ?

All video files are affected. Even if I use PowerDVD, Media10, Nero players the sound statis is still there. The sound blaster is a PCI card and the wires are connected correctly and I use an Altec Lansing 5.1 speaker setup. The "green and black wires" for the speakers are connected directly from the sound card. No amp mix used and I don't know if analog or digital audio is used, I play mpeg, avi, wvm files downloaded from the internet and files that I had made before. Thanks.

since I had installed the Divx 5 codecs, was it not enough for the AVI codecs. What other codecs do I need?

As BJ_M stated, there are about 50+ different codecs that can be used for AVI. You need GSpot to identify the codecs within the AVI files.

I think it was not only AVI files that my desktop has a problem. I had watched video from the internet (internet explorer news) and the statis is also there and I had also changed the PCI slot of my sound card and the desktop had no problem of recognizing it as an SBlive sound card.

So you're still having static problems after switching the card to another slot??

Try reinstalling directx if you can.

I remember I used to have that problem with a no-name soundcard in my old pentium 1 pc I used to have. After getting a driver patch to correct for the directx issue it cleared up perfectly.

If reinstalling directx doesn't work try getting the latest drivers from creative labs website for your particular soundcard.

Sad to hear that my sound sounded the same, with static for both the AVI video file and internet news. Tried to play music from iTunes and it had no static sound. What else could be defective?

i think you mean monitor out -- non the less , problems with some SB cards and some motherboard / video card driver combinations are known to have issues .......

Well you could always backup everything and do a fresh installation of windows. That might help.

Yes, i just did that a few weeks ago. It had the same problem already before and opted to format and re-install everything and thought that it would solve the problem but it did not so I was thinking that it might be hardware. The confusion on my side is : it plays music files OK but has static when it plays AVI files and internet videos

    Try this:

    1. Load your avi file into Virtualdub.
    2. Click Audio->Full processing mode.
    3. Click File->Save as WAV. Give the file a name with .wav extension. This will create a file containing the audio only.
    4. Play the file you created in #3 above. If the file plays OK, then you probably have a software issue. If the file plays with static then the static is likely contained in the avi. If not, then look somewhere else for your problem.

i am thinking the static is conflict (irq issue or driver issue) between your audio and video subsystems ... not unusual w/ SB cards of a certain era .... and with some motherboard/chipset combinations ...

    exactly what you describe

the WAV file that was converted sounded OK with no static. so, the previous posts were right, there could be an issue with the sound / video / motherboard combi problem.
thanks a lot everybody for the posts. at least now i would know what to do next.

It was a hardware issue. I had removed my NVidea FX 5200 and replaced it with my older NVidia Geforce MX 440 and installed the latest driver and played an AVI that used to have a static sound and now plays with no more issue.

    Thanks for the posts.
