A few years ago I tried the free version until the time ran out then I bought Plus 2.5. It's been a good program. I'm sure there are differences between the two, but I would say they are basicially the same...

Recently I tried xpress and I liked it. It seems faster but I did not test the speed. I liked xpress better than plus but the time ran out on it too. I want to buy xpress now. My wife also wants to kill me...

    Good luck.

Not really much difference. TMPGEnc Plus is the commercial version with a few added features where TMPGEnc is the freeware version, but neither are free, except for MPEG-1 encoding:
Freeware MPEG1 Encoding but 30 days trial MPEG2 Encoding, buy TMPGEnc Plus to get unlimited MPEG2 Encoding.
If you want to make DVDs, you need to be able to encode to MPEG-2, though MPEG-1 will work for lower resolutions in a DVD.

I would go with TMPGEnc Plus. It's not the fastest encoder around, but it's easy to use. Other faster encoders are, CCE, Procoder, Mainconcept and others. Most all have a trial version, so you can try them out. They are generally harder to set up than TMPGEnc.

There are also freeware MPEG-2 encoders available, such as QuEnc, FAVC, bbMPEG, FreeEnc and HC, among others: https://www.videohelp.com/tools?s=40#40 They all work OK, but may be harder to set up and slower than the commercial encoders.
