  1. Hi, I have a Sony DW-D26A. I've had it about a year. It's supposed to support dual layer dvd+r at 4x speed.

Problem is, my computer won't recognize any 8.5 GB disc that I put in it, and no burning program I use recognizes the disc as anything but 4.7 GB.

I checked for firmware updates, and there are none.

I'm using Roxio 6, and that's old. But I got a gut feeling that there's something else going on. Is there anything I need to do to get my recorder to recognize a DL 8.5 GB disc?

What a good program out there that can burn 8.5 GB data discs?

    Thanks!

Try ImgBurn and see if it properly sees the 8.5GB. If so, your burning software may need updating. If it doesn't see it, then either your burner firmware is out of date, or you need to try a different brand of DL media. I only use Verbatim +DL and I've had no problems with DL burning. Nero 6.3 sees them OK also, but I wouldn't use it for a DL burn. I have a Sony DW-18A with original firmware.

  3. Okay, thanks. I bought Verbatim DVD+R DL. Already made a coaster.

I wil try IMGBurn, and see what happens. Thanks!!!

  4. UPDATE:

Okay, so IMGBurn did recognize my DVD9 disc through my burner. So that means the burner and firmware isn't the problem.

The next question is, what kind of program should I get to burn data onto DVD9s ? I noticed that redwudz said Nero recognizes, but he wouldn't use it to do a DL burn.

So what out there is good?

I meant I wouldn't trust Nero to do a DVD video DL burn. Not with the prices of discs and Nero being problematic at times with DL. (And seemingly wanting to re-encode most anything you put in it.)

I do use Nero often for CDs and SL DVDs, but just the Nero Burning ROM part. But Nero should work fine burning a DL data disc as re-encoding and DL layer breaks aren't really a concern and that is where some DL burning programs tend to have problems. Of course you would want to use a fairly new version of Nero. I've stayed away from 7.0 and still use 6.6.

IMGBurn seems to be a favorite around here. Here's a how-to guide for setting layer-breaks with IMGBurn. I personally have not had trouble with Nero 7.0.8.2 but that is really the only stable version of Nero and other people say it's problematic.

CloneDVD2 is also excellent at burning DLs, though it's mainly a copying program and it's not too helpful for those of us who author our own discs from scratch.

  7. Okay, great! Does anybody know (in terms of Nero 6 still being a favorite with some), if Nero Burning Rom 6.6.1.4 is stable and recognized DL discs for recording data?

I found a site where I was able to download Nero Burning Rom 6.6.1.4. And was wondering first if anyone had any experience with it.

    THANKS!!!!
    Chris
