    Hi, Newbie here javascript:emoticon('')

I want to burn an avi file with subtitles (which are in a seperate .srt file) onto a DVD.

Here are the Source format details of file:

    Size: 735MB
    Format: AVI
    Video: mepg4, yuv420p. 720x576
    Audio: mp3, 4800Hz, stereo, 160kb/s

    Target format (auto-set by ffmpegX):
    Format: AVI DivX
    Video: mencoder mpeg4, 640x352, 940kbps, 25fps, no crop
    Audio: mp3, 48000 Hz, 128kbps

    1. What format do I have to select if I want to burn the final output file on DVD using Toast?
    2. I want the subtitles (.srt) to be permanently burnt on the final output file. BUT (and I have tested this) only when I have the Target format as AVI DivX are the subtitles present on final video file. If I select mpeg-ts for example subtitles don't get burnt.
    3. I am actually now encoding the video as AVI DivX with subtitle file in filter section. I changed the font size to make them larger. When I test the output file (at 8% completion) in VLC the size of the subtitles is not larger-infact they are smaller than original subtitles. Why?
    4. How can I ensure that final video size remains 720x576?

    and
    5. Is there a way I can burn just the original (unsubtitled) video file AND subtitle file (srt) onto a DVD and then select the subtitles options on/off once disc is in standalone player?

Your help is appreciated, I am badly stuck.

    thanks

I was so happy when I saw the page you gave the link for.

I followd exactly the instructions on that page but I get no Video_TS and no Audio_TS folders. All I get is a video file with extension .m2v (note: I did not wait for entire encoding to complete. this is what I get at 15% encoding progress).

What is more, when I drop the (partially encoded) .m2v file in VLC, no subtitles appear.

    Help!

I think what you see here is expected. ffmpegX converts the video first, then the audio, then the subs, then it authors as VIDEO_TS. So, if you stop the process early on, then it's still working on the video part (.m2v). You should wait for entire encoding to complete. (You could test with a shorter clip, tho'.)

Ok my good underhill friend. I will do the whole encoding and see what it gives me. Thanks. Will keep you posted and as your good uncle Bilbo once said, "Here and back again".

    Hi Case,
I think there is something wrong. I followed the instructions and at the end of the encoding I had a folder size of 5.98GB (from original file of 735MB). Doesn't seem normal. Plus I got NO video_ts and audio_ts folders but the following files:

    filename.ac3...............314.5 MB
    filename.m2V...............2.69 GB
    filename.mpg...............3.07 GB
    filename.mpg.s.mpg....212.8 MB
    filename.mpg.xml..............4 K

    This looks kinda wrong...what now?

    Thanks.

Actually, you're pretty close to being done. You've successfully generated both audio and video streams, and the tool even got as far as muxing them together. The 3.07GB mpg filesize is about right for a DVD video that is about 90 minutes in length.

For some reason, it didn't get as far as completing the authoring process. This happens to me from time to time (my guess is that the Progress utility behaves like a vampire process and causes some misbehaving). Fire up ffmpegX again, and go to the "tools" section. Select "author," making sure to select DVD. Give it the mpg file and see what happens. It may work just fine from that point on.

    1. Use preset: dvd mpeg2enc
    2. Video Tab: 4000 kbit/s, DVD 16:9 720x576 (PAL) 720x480 (NTSC) Framrate: NTSC or PAL
    3. Audio Tab: 192 kbit/s 48000Hz Stereo CBR, Choose "audio track" 1
    4. Filters Tab: tick the box "VOB Subtitles" 1 Burn, Click "Load subs" make sure your subtitle file is named exactly the same as the video file, ex: "movie.avi", "movie.srt", Position: 100 (default is 80)
    5. Options Tab: Tick the boxes: No SVCD scan, Decode with QuickTime, Altivec, Bicubic, Profile: DVD, Tick the box "Author as" and choose "DVD (VIDEO_TS)
    6. Hit ENCODE!

When it's done you will have these files: ac3, m2v, mpg, video_ts folder..burn the video_ts folder and trash the rest
