    Dear all,

I have a few files in .avi format that I'd like to convert to use on DVD, to show to a friend. However, these have multiple audio tracks. For example, one has English, Japanese, and Spanish. Another file might have Japanese and Italian language tracks. They're switchable when I watch them on Media Player Classic of course, but if I just chuck them in Nero Vision, when they're burned to DVD, they burn with only one language. The Japanese-Italian one, for example, burns with only Italian that is not switchable to Japanese.

My question is, would anyone be so kind as to recommend a tool that allows me to convert the files myself and select which audio stream to use? I don't always care about all of the audio streams included in some of my files, and sometimes I'd just like to select one or another for burning.

I'd be very grateful for any help on this matter. I couldn't find anything pertaining to this after some looking, but I may have just overlooked it. I hope someone might help.

Thank you very much in advance!

  2. Hi-

Extract the various audio streams, encode just the video, convert the audio if necessary (if it's MP3 audio, for example), and add the audio back in at the authoring stage.

I don't know anything about Nero Vision, but, on the other hand, I don't think I want to.

If you ask me how I'd do all that, I'd extract the audio using VDubMod, I'd use an AviSynth script to frameserve just the video into CCE for encoding, and I'd use Muxman (or DVDAUthorGUI if I want a menu) to author. The free version of Muxman allows up to 4 different audio tracks. DVDAuthorGUI allows 8. For converting MP3 audio to MP2 or AC3, BeSweet can be used. All but CCE are free. For a free and very good MPEG-2 encoder, I'd recommend the HC Encoder (which requires either a D2V or AviSynth script file).

Use VirtualDubMod to remove unwanted audio streams, then save out as AVI again, with Direct Stream set for both audio and video. That'll produce a single audio version of your AVI.

    Thank you so much!

I'm very grateful for this advice. I think I'll try VirtualDubMod first as I already have that but haven't used it yet.

To be honest I'm pleasantly surprised at how friendly everyone has been! So many forums I've seen, someone asks a question and then twenty people leap down their throat. Not so, here. This is one of the most helpful and kind forums I've ever seen. Thank you for that.

I appreciate this very much. Again, thank you for your kindness.

That you, moonmonday! Well, I guess the kind of answer you get, is based on how you ask. Your question is well put, has enough detail to be answered, and, well, you come across as a nice person, quite simply!
