again: how to capture dv, on MACINTOSH!

There are plenty of good howtos but I could not find anything for me! Please, how to get raw dv file (or avi with raw dv) on my Mac? Well, using FireWire prort and my DV Camcorder.

The problem is simple. I do have iMovie. But I do not want to edit the movie in it. I want to get a raw dv file on my Mac and transfer it to my Linux box where I will make a dvd. Please help!

Well, iMovie can save in dv format. However, it is so slow! I would like just to rip the movie directly from the camera. Do you have any ideas how to do this?

DV can only be transferred from a camcorder in real time. The camcorder has to play back the source tape. In real time.

I understand this. I am just asking what software can I use to transfer DV on Mac as a dv file or avi file.

I think I see what you're asking. First you are capturing to iMovie, then writing the file out as DV. I guess iMovie can't capture directly to a file? It has to save it somewhere. It can't keep 13GB/hour of video in RAM.

I'm sure someone with a Mac knows how to capture/transfer DV from camcorder directly to a file. Although I suspect iMovie is doing that, just not telling you the name of the file, causing you to write it out again as another file, then deleting the first one when you close the application.

Still doesn't quite say how to access the just-imported DV clips.

Somebody must know this. Mac users must do this all the time.

A search for "dv capture" at http://www.versiontracker.com/ will show you a bunch of tools to capture and catalog dv.

I like a program called Vidi for capturing DV from my video camera or my VCR (via ADS Pyro A/V link).

iMovie captures in raw DV file, of course...You can find the file inside project package...Right-click /or ctrl-click/ on saved project icon and choose show contenst...Dig until you find the file, Im too lazy now to write a full path...And if you have latest QuickTime Pro you can capture with it...Just choose New Movie Recording from File menu...Under Preferances you can choose input device and capturing format /choose Device Native/...Easy as it can be...
