Sony over HP
You do not want DVD-Ram
You want DVD + RW, which is most compatible with DVD players

Maybe a DVD-R/RAM would solve your problems.
The DVD-R for making home movies and the DVD-RAM for storing data. -
I have the Panasonic LF-D311 DVD-R/RAM drive and am quite happy with it. I have had no problems with the drive at all. One interesting thing though is that the cheapest DVD-R blanks ($2.95) seem to work best in my JVC player.

I don't know for sure, but I believe that the hype that DVD+RW would be the most compatible has fallen FAR short...
